Join us on Sunday, 20 October, for a unique photo walk through Madrid during “La Fiesta de la Trashumancia”, a celebration of Spain’s centuries-old tradition of transhumance. Ideal for beginner and intermediate photographers, we’ll capture the extraordinary sight of over 1,000 sheep parading through the city’s streets, surrounded by local shepherds in traditional attire.
Transhumance is the seasonal movement of livestock from summer to winter pastures, an essential part of Spanish rural culture. Madrid's fiesta, held annually since 1994, honors this practice as flocks make their way to winter pastures in Extremadura. Historically, shepherds paid symbolic taxes to the city as their sheep passed through Madrid, a tradition recreated during the parade.
Our meeting point will be at “Plaza de Cibeles” at 10:15 AM, where we’ll await the sheep's arrival around 11 AM. This will offer fantastic opportunities for street photography, allowing participants to experiment with motion shots and capture the essence of this fascinating cultural event. The flock will continue past iconic landmarks such as “Puerta del Sol”, making it an exciting route full of diverse photo subjects.
Fun fact: The “Merino sheep” you’ll see are famous worldwide for their high-quality wool, which has been exported from Spain since the Middle Ages. Don't miss this chance to combine a rich cultural experience with a photography adventure! Be sure to bring your cameras and curiosity!
