Delhi - India
Delhi, the vibrant capital of India, stands as a testament to the country's rich history, diverse culture, and enduring resilience. With roots dating back to the 6th century BCE, Delhi has served as the capital of various empires, including the Maurya, Mughal, and British, each leaving their indelible mark on the city's landscape and identity.
Today, Delhi is a bustling metropolis where ancient monuments stand alongside modern skyscrapers, and traditional markets buzz with activity amidst sleek shopping malls. The city's historic quarter, Old Delhi, is a labyrinth of narrow streets lined with centuries-old mosques, temples, and forts, including the imposing Red Fort and the Jama Masjid, India's largest mosque.
Other must-see attractions include the iconic India Gate, a war memorial reminiscent of the Arc de Triomphe, and Humayun's Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage site that served as a precursor to the Taj Mahal.
For a taste of Delhi's vibrant culture, visitors can explore the bustling markets of Chandni Chowk, sample street food delicacies like chaat and kebabs, or immerse themselves in the city's thriving arts scene at galleries and theaters.
If you time on your trip, you can visit Agra with it’s impressive Taj Mahal. Unfortunately, on my first trip I didn’t have that much time as I was heading west with the train to Amritsar. If you dare to take the train in India, Dehli is the perfect starting point with frequent trains to Agra, Mumbai, Varanasi, Kolkata, and many more places.
The best time to visit Delhi is during the cooler months of October to March when the weather is mild and pleasant, ideal for exploring the city's outdoor attractions. Avoiding the scorching heat of the summer months is advisable for a more comfortable experience.
With its rich history, architectural wonders, and cultural vibrancy, Delhi offers an unforgettable journey through the heart and soul of India.
