Travel Hacks | 8 November 2024

Travel Hack No 2 – Use Offline Maps to Navigate

The second travel hack is related to navigating the destination you’re visiting. Back in the days before mobile internet we carried around physical maps or had to memorize the way to get to sights. This changed with the introduction of smartphones and digital maps. Even though in most countries and cities you have mobile data connections it still can be useful to have offline maps to avoid astronomical data charges and/or getting lost if you have no reception.

There are quite a few of apps that provide such service like Google Maps, Guru Maps, Maps.me or HERE WeGo. They all allow you to plan routes and mark points of interest online, before you head out exploring your destination. I personally prefer to use Guru Maps which is based on OpenStreetMap data. It allows you to pin places, restaurants and bars. It includes also an offline GPS navigation and tracking of your path. It’s quite fun to view your walk with all the statistics included.

Overall Offline Maps Apps are ideal for travelling in countries with expensive data roaming charges (even though eSIM providers can help with problem, I will cover this soon) or remote locations with poor mobile signal. They can also help save battery as your phone doesn’t need to be constantly searching for data.
